If you have a big heart for the world, you probably, like me, often feel misunderstood.
I produced Ancestors, I Need Help last summer in the darkest place of my life.
Somehow I managed to take the overwhelming amount of shame that brought me very close to cutting the chord and turned into a prayer.
I felt so misunderstood by the world.
“All I am trying to do is love and why do you shame me when I try to love you.”
It feels so paradox and strange to me yet as a Black man with a heart this big for the human experience I also understand this is why I am here (or starting to learn ha).
The way out of that dark place was to feel my rage.
To feel my rage for how no one has really ever listened to my inner child.
My little boy.
When we feel our rage, we are listening to our inner child.
It feels so counter-intuitive but that’s the conditioning of colonialism.
I’ve learned to channel that rage as a way to build more intimacy with Spirit and to also use it to make music which has been the biggest gift I could give my inner child.
With that, I welcome in with you my next prayer called IN THE COFFIN to support you embracing your anger.
I brought the Ancestral African drumming with words from my heart.
You will feel me touch the polarity of this human experience all the way from grace/birth to death.
From “Every kid should know they can glow”, to “See these colonizers testing me, I’ll have their whole family crying heavily”.
Because no men out there have really modeled anger in a healthy way publicly (maybe Will Smith), I am figuring this all out. I give myself grace as I AM HUMAN.
I offer that as an invitation for grace for yourself as you embrace this anger.
Creating a safe space for yourself to feel all that’s been suppressed is the biggest gift you can give your own mental health and the next 7 generations.
