“Being a Black man in America does not make we want to live anymore”.
Dr. Umar Ifatunde (a popular Pan-African leader) was on a IG live when someone shared this. I’ve cut down the longer video and provided my response and tangible ways to keep your mind right.
I appreciate Dr. Umar’s response and what really touched me was the vulnerability of this man
In the past, I’ve struggled with suicidal ideation and I know there are Black men out there that are close to ending their lives because of the impacts of colonialism on the psyche.
I find myself more strong now as I continue to re-indigenize myself and reverse the self-hatred that colonialism has conditioned me with.
Maybe self-hatred is a strong word for you. If you are anxious all the time, you are caught up in trying to find approval within a system that wasn’t designed for your success. Quite the opposite.
If you can identify that you have a lot of thoughts around feeling worthless and you have no reason to live, I want to first say that is natural. My hope is to normalize this feeling so that we can actually talk about it and address the root of it
As Black men, we are being targeted first and foremost.
We’re the original protectors of the village and so if we’re gone it will make it more easy to remove us completely from the equation as an African Diaspora.
We have to do this healing and learn to love ourselves.
As a man it is our purpose to protect and to guide.
We can’t do that if we’re exhausted, hate our African identity, and struggle to ask for help.
The most radical words a Black man can say is “I NEED HELP”.
If you struggle with this, try this with your Ancestors first using a song I produced called Ancestors, I Need Help.
If there is any moment to dive into this work of healing, it’s now.
I’m considering putting together a cohort of men to do some real warrior training. If you’re interested reach out.
It’s time to awaken the warrior within you.
It’s time to embody the CHIEF!
It’s time to go back and grief for the little boy within all of us.
It’s time to train physically.
It’s time to remember how to fight and train with weapons.
God forbid it goes that far and we have to be prepared.
This is the call of our times.
Trust me I know, I feel fear in my own body as I sit with the reality of our times.
I take a deep breath and remember there is a possibility of deep brotherhood.
We remember our strength when we connect with each other with our hearts.
LET’S HEAL FOR THE NEXT 7!
If interested in this cohort I’m forming in partnership with the village or would like to connect heart to heart my cell is 2035542335 (I don’t answer any calls so please text) and you can also reach out to me via email at heru@heru.cx.
